The Spirit Guarantees Security in Christ get_app

Published: June 26, 2020

The Holy Spirit works to guarantee the eternal security of believers, giving us blessed assurance that we will receive the inheritance we have in Christ – which is eternal life.

Read Ephesians 1:11-14.

  • In whom do we place our hope and believe in order to gain our inheritance?
    (Jesus Christ)
  • Who seals and secures those who have believed in Christ?
    (the Holy Spirit)
  • What is the inheritance we have obtained (v. 11) and will acquire (v. 14)?
    (eternal life)
  • What is the cause and the purpose for God’s work in salvation and the Spirit’s work of sealing believers?
(the cause is God’s own will, verse 11; the purpose is to bring him praise and glory, verse 14)

Read 2 Corinthians 1:21-22.

  • How does this passage give us assurance if we have believed in Christ for salvation?
(the work of salvation, from start to finish, is God’s work; the Spirit dwells within our hearts as a guarantee)

Read Romans 8:14-17.

  • How does this passage give us assurance if we have believed in Christ for salvation?
(we are now sons, fully adopted into the family of God)
  • According to verse 17, what does being a child of God also make us?
(heirs with Christ; we receive every spiritual blessing – namely, eternal life with him)
  • Look at verse 16 and think about the assurance we have through the Spirit.
(he indwells us and bears witness to us, assuring us of our salvation, our adoption as sons)

Close in prayer, thanking God for sending the Holy Spirit to indwell believers and assure us of our adoption and all the spiritual blessings that come with adoption into God’s family – namely, eternal life with him.
