The Baptist Faith and Message states that Scripture “has God for its author, salvation for its end, and truth, without any mixture of error, for its matter. Therefore, all Scripture is totally true and trustworthy.” Today we look at the inerrancy of Scripture. In other words, God’s Word is perfect and true. There is no error in it whatsoever. These things are necessarily true because God himself is perfect and makes no errors (and he is Scripture’s ultimate author). That means that when we encounter a perceived error of any kind in Scripture, we start from the knowledge that God makes no errors and seek to reconcile our own understanding to that of a proper reading of Scripture.

Read John 17:1-26.

• Find each time the Word is mentioned in this prayer of Jesus.
• According to verse 17, what is God’s Word?
  (Truth)

Read Psalm 19:7-11.

• How is God’s Word described in this passage?
  (perfect, sure, right, pure, clean, true)
• What does the understanding that God’s Word is perfect, right, true (or, “truth, without any mixture of error”) cause the psalmist to do?
  (to desire God’s Word more than gold or honey, and to praise God and his Word)

Many other passages of Scripture point to the truth of Scripture, but perhaps one of the most notable chapters in the Bible concerning Scripture is Psalm 119. I encourage you to read the whole chapter this week, to consider the response of the psalmist to God’s Word, and to be challenged in your own response to God’s Word in comparison; but let’s just look at a couple verses to emphasize today’s point that Scripture is true and perfect, with no error in it.

Scripture is true. It has no error of any kind. Therefore, all Scripture is trustworthy.

Close in a time of prayer, thanking God that his Word is “truth, without any mixture of error,” making it trustworthy in all that it reveals about God, his world, and his people.
