Scripture Reading - Matthew 26:6-13

The book of Mark tells us that the ointment the lady poured on Jesus was worth about a year’s wages. Maybe $40,000 or so in today’s economy, this was probably her life’s savings.

Why were the disciples upset with her?
(They said it was a waste; it could have been given to the poor.)

How does Jesus respond to them?
(He tells them that what she did is good because she is preparing him for burial.)

Jesus is teaching the disciples that he is worth sacrificing everything for.

Read Matthew 16:24.

“Then Jesus told his disciples, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.’”

What did Jesus give up in order that we might be forgiven?

There is a cost to following Jesus. As we think this week about the cost that Jesus paid for us, we should also consider whether we are willing to give up everything to follow him.
